Overview

Metabolon is seeking a Bioinformatics Developer to join our Integrated Bioinformatics Platform team. This role sits at the intersection of bioinformatics, software engineering, and analytics platform development.

You will contribute to the development, maintenance, and evolution of Metabolon’s analytics platforms and related bioinformatics applications. The ideal candidate understands the underlying biological and computational algorithms while also being capable of building robust, production-ready web applications and scalable data workflows.

 

This position is well-suited to someone who enjoys translating complex biological data into actionable insights through well-designed software systems and modern engineering practices. Experience leveraging AI and generative AI tools to accelerate development, improve code quality, and enhance analytics workflows is highly valued.

 

This is a remote role with a preference for candidates located in Ireland or the UK

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, maintain, and extend features within Metabolon’s Integrated Bioinformatics Platform and related analytics systems
  • Debug, refactor, and improve existing codebases to enhance performance, reliability, and scalability
  • Implement and optimize bioinformatics algorithms and data-processing pipelines for metabolomics and multi-omics data
  • Translate biological and analytical requirements into robust, production-grade software solutions
  • Build and maintain applications and APIs that expose bioinformatics functionality to internal and external users
  • Develop and manage containerized applications and cloud-based deployments (AWS)
  • Contribute to CI/CD processes, testing frameworks, and engineering best practices
  • Utilize AI and generative AI tools to accelerate development, improve productivity, and enhance analytical capabilities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with scientists, data analysts, product teams, and engineers
  • Contribute to documentation, code reviews, and technical discussions within the team

Qualifications

  • Degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Strong programming skills in Python (daily use)
  • Experience developing web applications using frameworks such as Django (or equivalent)
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, AWS/cloud environments, and Git-based source control
  • Experience building and maintaining production software systems
  • Understanding of bioinformatics algorithms and biological data structures
  • Experience working with omics datasets (metabolomics knowledge is desirable)
  • Ability to translate complex biological data into meaningful analytical insights
  • Strong debugging skills and commitment to code quality, testing, and maintainability
  • Experience working in collaborative, cross-functional development environments
  • Strong ownership mindset and platform thinking
  • Ability to balance scientific rigor with engineering pragmatism
  • Clear communication of technical concepts to both scientific and engineering audiences
  • Continuous learning and curiosity about emerging technologies in AI, bioinformatics, and cloud computing

 Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools such as Nextflow or similar
  • Experience with scalable data-processing pipelines
  • Exposure to multi-omics integration approaches
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks
  • Experience applying AI/ML or generative AI tools within development or analytics workflows
